Sirin's Luxury Solarin Smartphone Provides High Security—for a Price

Sirin Labs has unveiled its first smartphone, the Solarin, which boasts high security and privacy features as well as luxury materials and design, starting at $13,800. The company differentiates its phone in a crowded marketplace through its ultra-high-security features, including Zimperium's zIPS mobile intrusion prevention system, which is built into the handset, as well as integrated chip-to-chip 256-bit AES encryption, which military agencies around the world use to protect their communications. The Solarin smartphone is the result of two-and-a-half years of research and development after a smartphone used by one of Sirin Labs' co-founders was hacked in 2013. That incident inspired the founders to pursue more secure alternatives. A "security switch" on the back of the handset puts the phone into a shielded mode that fully encrypts all calls and messages. The creation of the Solarin was driven by high-security and luxury design requirements, not by a price target, according to the company.
