Sony Unveils SmartEyeglass, Its Version of Google Glass

Sony's SmartEyeglass Developer Edition is the company's latest entry into the augmented-reality (AR) and virtual-reality (VR) marketplaces that have been popularized by devices like the Google Glass Explorer Edition. The SmartEyeglass device, which is in beta form, includes several twists on the Google Glass format, including a separate hand controller input device that is wired to the glasses and lets users control its many features and modes. The initial styling of the glasses is different, too, with a thick eyeglass frame that holds all of its components, compared with Google's sleeker styling. The Sony devices are available only to developers for now so that they can build apps and new possibilities for the glasses, just as Google did early in its Glass project. The Google Glass Explorer Edition was halted in January, but new versions could be released in the future. Sony's new SmartEyeglass edition is joined by other Glass-like devices from companies such as GlassUp, Laster, ORA, Atheer Labs and JINS.
