When you think about a smartphone that's designed to be rugged and weatherproof, chances are you don't also think about it being thin (7.9mm), sleek and sexy. But that's only because you haven't tried T-Mobile's Sony Xperia Z. In fact, the new phone from Sony is all of those things. Plus it's a fast, capable, full-featured smartphone with every bell and whistle that's waterproof to boot. Just how sleek is this phone? The exterior of the Xperia Z is so smooth it's almost frictionless. A common sound in the office during this test was the soft "plop" of the phone as it hit the carpeted floor under my desk, having slowly slid off what I'd thought was a horizontal surface. This phone feels as good as it looks with its smooth surface and softly rounded edges. The full 1080p 5-inch display with 441 dpi far surpasses Apple's vaunted Retina display. The colors are rich, the motion of videos smooth and the photos taken by the 13-megapixel camera are crisp. As you'd expect with an advanced Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean)-based device, it's got every feature you want, including a microSD slot, HDMI and a micro USB port. Oh, and yes it does actually work underwater.
