With Scratch's $99 Coolpad Arise Phone, There's No Hefty Service Bill

Scratch Wireless wants to be your next wireless phone service, and it's making an intriguing offer to attract your attention—Scratch will sell you one of its new Coolpad Arise smartphones for $99 and let you use the phone for free calling and data 24/7 as long as you connect through a WiFi network. The "WiFi First" idea, according to Scratch, is that users who have frequent access to WiFi can use a smartphone that doesn't require a service contract or hefty bill each month. Users who sometimes need to use their phone when they don't have WiFi access can buy inexpensive daily or monthly passes to access phone minutes or data allotments to bridge the gap. Texting is always free for users, whether they are texting via WiFi or through cellular networks. The Coolpad Arise is an Android smartphone with all the basics, including a 4-inch touch-screen display, a dual-core processor and a 2-megapixel rear camera. Customers can just buy a phone and start using it, with no phone contracts or commitments. Check out this eWEEK slide show for more details about the Coolpad Arise.
