Micromuse Hones its Business Service Management Focus

The company aims to make its mark with two new bundles.

Infrastructure management specialist Micromuse Ltd. this week is sharpening its focus on BSM (business service management) with the launch of two new BSM bundles aimed at providing visibility into end-to-end service availability and troubleshooting.

On the heels of the launch of its first application discovery capability early last month, Micromuse is looking to distinguish itself in BSM with a combination of automated service discovery and dependency mapping from OEM partner Collation Inc. and its own strength in consolidated event management and impact analysis, according to Micromuse officials in New York.

The new Micromuse BSM Availability Solution provides a single management interface and combines business and operational indicators.

The bundle performs service modeling using a real-time federated information model; service impact analysis; transaction monitoring for Internet, Windows and IT services; SLA (service-level agreement) tracking and service reporting; and event consolidation.

The Micromuse BSM Assurance Solution adds to that mix applications and systems discovery, automated service modeling, agents for application and system monitoring, and root-cause analysis for troubleshooting.

Both offerings automatically discover the business service infrastructure and map its dependencies, then maintain the dependency model.

Micromuses patented adapter technology enables real-time data collection that includes business indicator data as well as dependency, status and transaction data from a variety of third-party sources.

Those can include ERP (enterprise resource planning) and CRM (customer relationship management) systems, CMDBs (configuration management databases), element management systems and custom applications.

The management dashboard for the bundles can be customized to suit the needs of business executives and managers as well as IT operators in differing roles.

The offerings compete with the "framework" approaches to BSM being taken by large enterprise management players such as BMC Software Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Managed Object Solutions Inc.

Although interest is high in BSM, it has not been widely implemented to date and so remains untested, said Debra Curtis, an analyst with Gartner Inc., in Amherst, N.H.

"There is not a big pile of credible enterprise-scale deployments. We are seeing a lot of pilots, and those are the kinds of tests the market needs," Curtis said.

Both offerings will be available April 1.
