Novell and Oracle on April 4 agreed to combine forces to speed up the slow-but-steady development of grid systems for enterprise data centers on Linux.
The two companies announced the availability of a new accelerator service designed to help enterprise customers streamline the deployment of grid infrastructures for data centers that run on Novells SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. The accelerator service works with a system stack that entails Oracle Database 10g, Oracle Real Application Clusters, Oracle Application Server 10g and Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g.
The Oracle-Novell Accelerator is not a piece of software per se. It is a service that uses Oracle grid control management software and the automated storage management feature of Oracle Database 10g to provide customized management settings for monitoring and managing grid applications—along with infrastructure software and storage.
Grid computing provides higher overall throughput for an enterprise, by leveraging a number of networked computers to distribute computing power across an infrastructure. Grids use the resources of many separate computers connected by a network (usually the Internet) to solve large-scale computation problems.
“Lets face it, Oracle Database 10g infrastructures arent built by mouse-clicks after dropping in software into a CD-ROM,” said Oracle grid computing developer Paul Veilleux. “Grid computing deployments require careful planning when setting up best practices to enable virtualization, standardization and automation procedures. That is why we have collaborated to provide a turnkey solution for the Oracle grid-enabled platform.”
