SD-WAN technologies offer such capabilities as path selection to ensure the best path for the particular workload, zero-touch, central orchestration and the ability to choose from a range of transport, from MPLS and Ethernet to broadband and LTE.

"Those are table stakes," Silver Peak's Vincenzo said. "You have to be able to do that. That's where the discussion starts and that's where a lot of products from competitors end."

With Unity EdgeConnect, Silver Peak is able to offer such features as path condition—which ensures that packets aren't lost when packets are dropped or found out of order—and bi-directional RAID control. The company is able to build off of its WAN optimization background to offer a broad range of capabilities, he said.

Aryaka officials also noted the array of solutions that it offers, including SD-WAN Ultra, WAN optimization-as-a-service and its Smart CDN content-delivery network technology.

"Our unique ability to significantly improve application performance and boost business execution and productivity for global enterprises is the key driver behind the rapidly increasing demand for our solutions and our pipeline growth," Aryaka President and CEO Shawn Farshchi said in a statement."

The announcements by Silver Peak and Aryaka came the same week as other SD-WAN vendors made news. Talari unveiled new licensing options for its SD-WAN technologies, while Viptela announced partnerships with Zenoss—which makes IT monitoring products—and Centina Systems and its advanced analytics technologies.
