There's little doubt that unified communications (UC) has moved to the cloud. The benefits of UC-as-a-service (UCaaS) technology mirror those of other IT tasks in the cloud—greater agility and scalability, easier deployment and management and lower costs. Industry analysts continue to see vendors making more of their collaboration products available via the cloud and increasingly offering suites of integrated products rather than stand-alone offerings. And the trend will continue in that direction. Analysts with Synergy Research Group (SRG) said in a report in January that although UCaaS stand-alone applications are more popular now, the market for business suites is growing faster. "UCaaS continues to be a force for change within the business communications market," SRG Chief Analyst Jeremy Duke said at the time. "Now some vendors are broadening their product offerings to provide more comprehensive solutions, examples being Cisco adding video conferencing and voice capabilities to Spark and Microsoft adding UCaaS to Office 365. We are now entering a world of next-generation UCaaS where stand-alone is not so stand-alone anymore." Analysts at IHS Infonetics have been following the space closely and this month released a list of the top 10 UCaaS providers in North America. Here is IHS' list.
