App Performance Is Key to Business Performance: Riverbed Survey

Application performance has always been important, even back in the days when the application remained relatively static, housed in a server that sat behind the firewall in a data center and was accessed by workers sitting at their desks in the office. Performance is just as important now, but the rapidly changing nature of business and technology poses new challenges and creates a performance gap between the needs of the business and the IT department's ability to deliver the technology to meet those needs, according to the findings of a new survey by Riverbed Technology. The rise of cloud computing and hybrid IT is a concern, the survey found. Putting workloads into the cloud can help drive down costs and increase agility, but having some applications in the cloud and others on premises can increase complexity. At the same time, in an increasingly mobile world, having the applications, data and workers essentially all over the place can make it difficult to ensure good application performance, according to Riverbed. What businesses need most is visibility into and control of all applications, because as Riverbed notes, you can't control what you can't see. This eWEEK slide show gives some of the highlights from the survey.
