Managing complex IP networks can be a burdensome, if not impossible, task. Many IT administrators have tried to manage their IP infrastructures manually, using spreadsheets and user-dependent scans to identify and track IP addresses. While that method may work for small, relatively static networks, the truth of the matter is that manual management is time-consuming, prone to failure and a waste of resources that could be better used elsewhere. SolarWinds aims to tame the complexity of network management with IP Address Manager, or IPAM, an application that offers extensive IP management and reporting capabilities. IPAM brings policy-based control to Domain Name System (DNS) and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) services, as well as change-management capabilities to a multitude of networking products. Compliance reporting, as well as roles-based administration rounds out the package. While ad hoc reporting can deliver the answers to many questions, real-time alerting helps network managers stay on top of network problems and manage networks in a proactive fashion.
