Version 7.0 of executive Software Internationals Diskeeper disk defragmenter, which shipped last month, gains remote network installation capabilities and support for Windows XP.
Diskeeper is built into Windows 2000 and XP, but the separate software version, priced at $249 for servers and $49 for workstations, has more advanced features and is a good investment for companies with larger Windows-based networks.
Version 7.0s remote installation capabilities allow multiple Diskeeper workstations to be installed simultaneously via the network. In addition, administrators can remotely schedule boot-time defragmentation for system files without going to every desktop.
The handy user interface is basically unchanged from previous versions. I installed the server version on a server running Windows 2000 Server and was able to easily install the workstation version on a couple of systems running Windows 2000 Professional and Windows NT.
Installing the software on Windows 2000 and XP systems will not remove the built-in defragmenter, but Diskeeper will become the default defragmentation tool.
