HP's Road Back to Profitability Fraught With Challenges
Hewlett-Packard is in the midst of a multiyear turnaround project that CEO Meg Whitman said will bring the tech giant back to profitability after several years of being hobbled by everything from the sharp downturn in the global PC market to executive instability that has muddled the company's vision and execution. Whitman has warned that it could take as long as five years to complete the makeover, but has said she is confident in the strategy. The company took a hit in the last fiscal quarter, when it reported a drop in overall revenue, continued problems due to the PC market and disappointing numbers from its $30 billion Enterprise Group, which led Whitman to change executives in the unit. HP is a massive company with a broad product portfolio and will stay that way under Whitman, who has argued that the company is better with all those pieces under its umbrella. But it won't be easy to turn around the company, which has a range of challenges before it, from the persistent issue around PCs and mobile devices to the cloud, convergence and competition.
