Uniloc USA has filed a lawsuit against several corporations, alleging unauthorized use of Uniloc’s anti-piracy technology.
Named in the lawsuit are Adobe Systems, Symantec, Pinnacle Systems (part of Avid Technology), National Instruments Corp., Pervasive Software, CA Technologies, Sonic Solutions, Onyx Graphics, SafeNet and Aladdin Knowledge Systems (owned by SafeNet). According to Uniloc, the companies did not get a license from Uniloc to use its anti-piracy product activation method and system.
“Uniloc has been delivering and licensing effective device recognition products to our clients since 1993,” Brad Davis, CEO of Uniloc, said in a statement Sept. 15. “Our decision to take legal action against Adobe, Symantec and others was based on the need to protect our patented products so we can continue to deliver a high-quality product to our clients. Uniloc prides itself on our innovative spirit and our ever-evolving research into new technologies that will further benefit the software community.”
The lawsuit was filed Sept. 14 in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Tyler Division. Uniloc also sued Sony, McAfee and other companies in July, giving the same reason.
In 2003, the company began a long legal fight with Microsoft that resulted in Uniloc winning a $388 million award in 2009. That award was later overturned.
