Apple Bumps Up iBooks
Three of the four new consumer-portable configurations include 900MHz PowerPC G3 processors; an entry-level version clocks in at 800MHz. The previous three-tier lineup, released in November 2002, featured two 800MHz and one 700MHz models.
In addition, the new iBooks come stocked with 30GB to 60GB hard drives, while previous versions ranged from 20GB to 30GB.
A $1,778, top-of-the-line model features a 14.1-inch screen, an ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 graphics card with 32MB of video memory; 640MB of RAM, a 60GB hard drive, and a Combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive. A $1,499 model includes 256MB of RAM and a 40GB hard drive. An iBook with a 12.1-inch display and 128MB of RAM is $1,299. Finally, a $999, 800MHz configuration packs a 30GB hard drive and a CD-ROM drive.
The systems range from 4.9 to 5.9 pounds, include Fast Ethernet, and can be outfitted with AirPort and Bluetooth wireless connectivity.
