Analysts are scratching their heads over Micron Electronics plan to turn its HostPro Inc. subsidiary into an application service provider, which would make Micron the first big-time PC maker to become an ASP. IDC analyst Melanie Posey was quoted as saying, "Its not the kind of thing you would set out to do unless youre desperate ... Theyre two fundamentally different businesses."

But what will folks think when Micron announces other diversification plans? Sources say Micron may open a chain of drive-through liquor stores, market a line of "antigravity" wrinkle creams and, cashing in on the buzz created by "That 70s Show," build a dozen 8-track tape manufacturing plants in South America and New Jersey.
