StorCase Technologys latest InfoStation RAID array offers high-density storage in a small footprint. The compact 10-bay array is a good choice for add-on JBOD PCI RAID server storage applications in space-constrained data centers.
The InfoStation, which shipped at the end of August, is the first RAID array Ive seen that uses Seagate Technologys Savvio small-form-factor Ultra320 hard drives. The Savvio Ultra320 high-density drives support the SCSI and Fibre Channel interfaces.
The Savvio line has capacities of only 36.7GB and 73.4GB, but the drives 2.5-inch form factor means storage vendors can pack high storage density into compact arrays, as demonstrated by StorCases InfoStation.
The InfoStation that I tested has a 1U (1.75-inch) chassis and can hold 20 2.5-inch Savvio drives, providing as much as 740GB of raw storage capacity for $14,000.
The InfoStation has built-in redundancy, supporting dual 300-watt, hot-swappable, load-sharing power supplies, and it sports dual hot-swappable fans. For higher performance, the backplane can be configured in dual-channel mode, and a built-in repeater interface provides daisy-chaining capabilities with other arrays.
