Cisco, IBM To Pair Up For SAN Solutions
IBM and Cisco Tuesday extended their relationship to bring open storage networking products to enterprise customers. Under the terms of the agreement, which were not made public, IBM and its partners will have the ability to offer customers Ciscos MDS 9000 Family products, beginning with the Cisco MDS 9509 Multilayer Director, Cisco MDS 9216 Multilayer Fabric Switch and associated modules. IBM expects to finish interoperability qualification of these products and offer them to customers by the end of the first quarter in 2003.

Taiwan Optical Storage Production to Fall 7.7% On-Year
In contrast to projected 4.8% growth in global optical storage production, Taiwanese makers are headed for a 7.7% decline this year, predicts the Photonics Industry and Technology Development Association (PIDA), citing falling average selling prices (ASPs) and slow production shifts to more advanced devices. Taiwanese companies dominate CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW disc production, but prices of these products are continuing to drop, explained Anson Cheng, a PIDA analyst. The association also blames the expected decline on Taiwans poor penetration of the home entertainment market, a better source of revenue than the PC peripheral market.

HP Plans To Double Storage Sales Into Multivendor Systems
Its post-Compaq Computer merger plans on track, a top Hewlett-Packard storage executive said the company is poised to double its storage sales into multivendor solutions. Michael Feinberg, CTO for HPs Network Storage business, said HP has put a priority on doubling "off-platform" storage sales into accounts that have rival hardware from vendors such as IBM, Dell Computer and Sun Microsystems. Recently published IDC estimates show HPs market share in the networking storage business at 26 percent. The next closest competitor, IBM, maintains 20 percent market share, according to IDC.

Hitachi Unveils New Hard Drive Plans
Hitachi has announced its strategy for the hard drive business it acquired from IBM last spring. The companys plans include four new business divisions and the introduction of new products. The four areas are the consumer electronics (including automotive), mobile, server and desktop markets. Hitachi also has announced an array of new products, including a 20 GB 2.5-inch drive, as well as 20 GB and 40 GB 1.8-inch drives. Additionally, the company will launch a 15,000 rpm, 3.5-inch drive with 73 GB of storage capacity.
