MySQL AB is getting a firmer grasp on 64-bit computing: The company on Tuesday announced that it is porting its open-source database to take advantage of additional OSes running atop Intel Corp.s 64-bit Itanium 2 processor.

The current version of MySQL, 4.0, has added support for HP-UX 11.1 v2; Version 4.1 (available as a developer release) will also run on Windows.

The Uppsala, Sweden, company quoted Intel Corp.s Alastair McKeeman, technical director of Intel EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), in a release. McKeeman described the MySQL database on an Itanium 2-based platform as a "smart formula for yielding value and performance from heavy-duty applications."

MySQL already runs on other HP-UX platforms, IBM AIX, Sun Microsystem Inc.s Solaris, major Linux distributions, Mac OS X, Novell Inc.s NetWare and Microsoft Corp.s Windows.

Both MySQL 4.0, the production version, and MySQL 4.1, the development version, can be downloaded from MySQLs site. The development version is intended for testing by the open-source user community.
