Oracle Integrates Apps

Oracle Corp. last week announced a new road map for certifying PeopleSoft and JD Edwards applications with its newly rebranded middleware offering, Oracle Fusion Middleware.

The platform includes Oracle Application Server 10g application development tools and J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) Application Server, Web services infrastructure, ESBs (enterprise service buses) and integration server, business process management and activity monitoring, business intelligence tools, security and identity management, enterprise portals, Oracles data hubs, and Oracle Collaboration Suite, the company said.

In addition, Oracle plans to certify PeopleSoft and JD Edwards applications with the Oracle Fusion Middleware platform this quarter and next quarter, respectively, the company said.

Robert Shimp, vice president of technology at Oracle, in Redwood Shores, Calif., said users of those environments "will have the ability to run their applications with a common set of services."

Meanwhile, later this week, Oracle plans to announce that Deutsche Post World Net, of Bonn, Germany, a leading logistics and transport provider, will use Oracle Application Server 10g as the foundation for its IT infrastructure. Deutsche Post will build an advanced ESB using Oracle Application Server 10g, Oracle officials said.

Oracle officials said the companys adherence to JSR (Java Specification Request) 208, also known as Java Business Integration, is a key part of this effort.

Deutsche Post officials said the organization plans to develop an SOA (service-oriented architecture) using the 10g platform. That project will rely heavily on integration of applications from a number of different providers, and officials said the ability of Oracles technology to work seamlessly with all of these applications was a key driver in their decision to go with Oracle.

Oracle officials said the German company sought the Oracle solution to help integrate its various systems and applications the company has amassed through its acquisitions over the last several years. Deutsche Post has done $18 billion worth of acquisitions over the last eight years, including the acquisition of Airborne Express in 2003 and of DHL International GmbH in 2002.
