Many firms only now are tightening their belts. CyberSource, for one, is cutting back on its marketing efforts in order to get profitable more quickly, according to sources at the Silicon Valley company. Recent departures include marketing VP William Donahoo, a Novell veteran whos moving back to Utah to spend more time with his two sons.

The AARPs automated computer system sent me a membership card last week. It included movie discounts, travel discounts, and a bunch of other sweet deals. Toss in a free face-lift and some bingo cards, and I might pay the membership fee.
