Metro Group CIO: RFID to Make Thousands of Jobs Superfluous

As RFID technology is increasingly used, thousands of jobs will become superfluous as automation dominates from the supply chain to store shelves, according to Zygmunt Mierdorf, the Chief Information Officer of German retailer Metro Group.

Retailers will, however, be able "to employ more staff in those areas in which they can contribute to added value," such as customer service, Mierdorf said. This would help stores to have higher sales, he said.

Metro Group’s use of RFID tags is already underway. Last November, the company announced it would only accept RFID tagged pallets from suppliers, making the company the first in the world to require RFID tags from suppliers.
