As the date for compliance with the HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) Security Rule moves closer, health care providers can check up on medical devices with a common form.

HIMSS (Healthcare Information Management Systems Society) has created a standard manufacturer disclosure statement to describe medical device security. It identifies devices that transmit or maintain electronic protected health information (ePHI) and describes devices security features. ACCE (American College of Clinical Engineering) and ECRI (formerly the Emergency Care Research Institute) have also endorsed the form, called MDS2.

Visit HIMSS for more information.
