With everything thats going on in complex corporate networks and the increasing use and misuse of that resource by peer-to-peer and malware traffic, monitoring network usage at 15 minute intervals is no longer sufficient.
To address that issue, NetScout Systems Inc. on Monday will launch new HDPM (high-definition performance management) technology in its nGenius Performance Manager 3.0 and nGenius Probe firmware release 3.0.
NetScouts remote network performance monitoring software, nGenius Performance Manager 3.0, working in conjunction with the updated nGenius RMON probes, can display historical application and network performance statistics gathered at one-minute intervals, with corresponding one-second peak values.
The new software and firmware upgrades also allow the users to view all applications traffic—including all servers and end users as well as conversation pairs flowing across the network.
“It will show every single host and application that went through the network, even if it is less than one percent of the traffic,” said Eileen Haggerty, senior product marketing manager at NetScout in Westford, Mass.
The new HDPM technology also can classify application traffic by URL and sub-URL as well as delineate applications served via Citrix and VOIP (voice over IP) user names. At the same time, it can classify network traffic according to quality-of-service delivery guarantees within virtual LANs or Permanent Virtual Circuits.
That level of granularity allows network operators to profile applications behavior across the network and improve network security by being able to track low-volume applications that could represent viruses, worms or other threats.
HDPM also can recognize peer-to-peer applications traffic that can waste expensive WAN bandwidth. Using advanced flow classification, HDPM can recognize such peer-to-peer applications as Kazaa, Shareaza, Morpheus, BearShare, LimeWire, eDonkey, eMule and iMesh.
Along with the HDPM upgrades, the company also released enhancements to its nGenius Flow Recorder and added a new nGenius Flow Collector. nGenius Flow Recorder 3.0, which provides an audit trail for troubleshooting, adds HTTP session reconstruction and playback, pattern matching and alarming, and the ability to replay VOIP calls.
nGenius Flow Collector provides lower-cost instrumentation and monitoring for NetFlow-enabled networks by eliminating the need for dedicated probes.
