IT Job Promotions: July Among Best Months, December the Worst
by Nicholas Kolakowski
With the economy showing some signs of improvement, workers across the spectrum are starting to wonder more about salary raises and promotionsthings that tend to come when businesses do better.
Start the New Year with a Bang
Over the course of the past decade, according to LinkedIn, some 16 percent of promotions in the United States occurred in January.
Or Maybe Not So Much
That 16 percent for January, however, is something of a decline from the 1990s, when 22 percent of promotions happened in the first month of the year.
Blame the Millennials
LinkedIns reasoning for that January promotion decline? Professionals born in the 1980s and 1990s, whose promotions are apparently more evenly spaced throughout the yearversus professionals born in the 1950s, more than 20 percent of whom enjoyed that January bump-up.
For IT jobs, the best months for promotion are April, July and October.
Not a Good Time
For those same IT positions, December is the worst month for bumps up the corporate ladder.
Differs by Country
In the United States, January remains the big promotion month. Its the same story in France and Australia, according to LinkedIn. In India, though, April seems the best month for scoring that big transition.
For people who specialize in management consulting, September was the biggest month for a promotion.
