First OpenSuSE Linux Distribution Set for October
Novell announced on Wednesday that the first result of its new OpenSuSE project, SuSE Linux 10.0, will be released in early October 2005.
Like SUSE Linux Pro before it, SUSE Linux 10 is designed both to be a cutting edge Linux distribution for enthusiasts, while providing both easy to use KDE and GNOME interfaces for less experienced desktop users.
In addition to its desktop, SUSE Linux 10.0 includes more than 1,500 open-source Linux applications and packages that can be optionally installed for advanced Web hosting, application development and home networking.
The operating system package includes the latest Firefox Web browser; OpenOffice.org 2.0 office suite and e-mail and instant messaging clients.
It also includes spam blockersbased on SpamAssassin anti-virus software and an integrated firewall.
On the more bleeding edge of technology, the new SuSE will preview Xen virtualization and iFolder for universal file access.
This edition of SuSE also includes features to simplify Windows migration. The operating system can also be run in a dual-boot setup with Windows.
While the new SuSE Linux can be downloaded for free, it will also come in a retail version.
The commercial edition version comes with installation support and comprehensive manuals to help users get the most out of Linux.
SuSE Linux 10 will also be used in 2006 in creating the next version of SLES (SuSE Linux Enterprise Server) and its related Novell operating systems such as Open Enterprise Server.
"SuSE Linux has always had one of the fullest feature sets of any distribution," said Chris Ingle, group consultant at IDC, in a statement.
"While these features are valued by customers, Novells focus on ease of use aims to make the distribution accessible to a wider user base," Ingle said. "Key to Novells success with future product releases will be building a community at openSuSE.org which works well with the existing Linux community and drives wider adoption of open source products."
The retail version of SuSE Linux 10.0 will be offered globally via all of Novells major retail channels at a suggested retail price of $59.
In the past, SuSE Linux Professional listed for $100 for the full version.
