Cell Firms Teaming on Five-Digit Message Codes

Twelve U.S. cellular phone companies are working together to let customers use cross-carrier five-digit numbers for text messaging promotions. The reality TV program "American Idol" earlier this year allowed AT&T Wireless customers to vote for their favorite musicians by sending a text message. But text votes from customers of other carriers were sent to the ether, said Yankee Group wireless analyst Roger Entner.
