ORLANDO, Fla. -- Based on the notion that enterprises are clamoring for wireless bandwidth more than consumers are, Verizon Wireless and Lucent Technologies Inc. today at the CTIA Wireless 2002 trade show announced plans to launch a high-speed wireless data service trial in the Washington area next month, focusing on business customers and their specific security needs.

The service will provide enterprise users with secure mobile access to corporate applications such as e-mail and intranets at data transmission speeds of up to 2.4 Mbps using CDMA technology called 1xEV-DO. They will be using wireless modems from Sierra Wireless Inc. Lucent will be providing the infrastructure equipment

Verizons highest speed offering to date is its "Express Network" service, available in a handful of markets, which offers data speeds that can reach as high as 144Kbps.

Business customers will access the Verizon network via a virtual private network in order to keep the data secure, according to officials at Verizon in Bedminster, NJ.

Verizon has a similar partnership with Nortel Networks Inc. for a trial launch in San Diego, which will begin in June.
