Micro Solutions new backpack wireless workgroup server provides an easy-to-use, all-in-one gateway appliance designed for small-business networks.

The Backpack, which shipped in September, combines 802.11b wireless access, a firewall, file storage and a four-port switch in a small package.

The Backpack comes in two models. I tested the $700 model, which provides up to 80GB of storage. Sites that need more space can purchase the 120GB model, which lists for $800.

The Backpack comes standard with a built-in 802.11b wireless access point that supports 64-bit and 128-bit WEP encryption. The Backpack supports network file-sharing protocols for Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Unix and NetWare clients.

Setting up the Backpack is simple via the Web browser, which is important for small shops with minimal IT staff. The browser-based user interface provides a wizard that guides users step by step through setup. I was able to configure network settings, wireless access and network file shares in a matter of minutes.
