IBM announces one of its most secure notebooks to date, with the introduction of the T Series ThinkPad T42 with an integrated fingerprint reader (a $50 option). This type of fingerprint reader captures more data than a traditional picture capture window because it scans more of the fingertips surface area, helping to prevent misidentification. Users swipe their finger across a small horizontally oriented sensor to log on to their systems, software applications, Web sites or databases.
The fingerprint reader works in combination with the new version of the hardware- and software-based Embedded Security Subsystem (a chip on the system board), which ships with every system. The new version allows fingerprint identification and protects vital security information, such as encryption keys, electronic credentials and passphrases, and guards against unauthorized user access. The system starts at $1,899 and will ship on Oct. 19.
