IBM Launches Cloud Platform for Developers IBM announces two new solutions for developers to use to create and deliver software in both public and private cloud environments. PayPal Launches PayPal X Developer Challenge At its PayPal X Innovate 2009 developer conference, PayPal issued a challenge to developers to solve the fundamental problems people face when trying to pay or get paid. Sun Teams with PayPal for Java Store Payments At the PayPal X Innovate developer conference, Sun Microsystems announces an alliance with PayPal to support application payment in the Java Store Beta and enhancements to the beta user experience. Google Chrome Beta 4.0 Sports Bookmark Sync Google has a lot riding on its Google Chrome Web browser. The search engine Nov. 2 added bookmark sync for its latest build of Chrome to let the browser's 30 million users to keep their favorite Web pages up to date across multiple computing devices. The Chrome 4.0 beta is also 30 percent faster from the current stable release. Speed is a big deal for Chrome and Google's forthcoming Chrome Operating System, which will be the Linux-based launching platform for the Chrome browser and Web applications. Google Co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin recently gave the Chrome team a multi-million-dollar stock bonus for creating the browser. Yahoo Open-Sources Traffic Server, Updates Hadoop Yahoo takes its second major step in five months toward open-source cloud computing by introducing an open-source version of Traffic Server, a high-performance application server for builders of cloud services. 13 Ways Symbian Can Maintain Its Smartphone OS Lead As the Symbian Foundation held its annual developer event in London, it was clear that the foundation is looking at how it can maintain the market share lead it has with smartphones. The Symbian OS is the market leader, and it powers phones from Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, Motorola and others. However, competition from other platforms, most notably Android, but also Apple and RIM, presents a growing challenge to the Symbian Foundation and its leader Lee Williams. While Williams has taken swipes at Android and Google, he also knows a key factor to maintaining a leadership role in the smartphone space is to have developers create great apps for your platform. Thus Symbian has ratcheted up its developer outreach. Google Android 2.0 Lands as World Awaits Verizon Droid Google releases Android 2.0, the long-awaited OS build code-named Éclair that is expected to appear first on the upcoming Motorola Droid smartphone from Verizon Wireless. A feature called Quick Contact lets users tap a contact photo to call, SMS or e-mail that person. The Android 2.0 SDK features new sync, contacts and account manager APIs. The first in a series of Droid smartphones will run the latest Android build and is expected to launch Nov. 6 on Verizon Wireless, according to the Boy Genius Report. Tasktop Launches Tasktop Pro 1.6 with New Eclipse, ALM Support Tasktop Technologies, maker of Eclipse Mylyn and the provider of task management solutions for application lifecycle management (ALM), has announced Tasktop Pro 1.6. IBM Researchers Simplify Mobile Web Browsing A team of IBM researchers has created technology that makes it simpler for Webmasters to make their Websites more readable on mobile devices. Adobe, Salesforce Push Rich App Dev in the Cloud Salesforce.com and Adobe Systems announce a new solution that brings together the developer productivity power of the Salesforce.com Force.com platform with the richness and ubiquity of the Adobe Flash Platform. Gartner: ‘Citizen Developers` to Deliver 25% of Apps by 2014 By 2014, citizen developers will build at least 25 percent of new business applications, according to Gartner. Citizen developers include everyday people empowered with newfangled tools to build applications and create mashups that can be used in enterprise settings. Microsoft: Windows 7 is a Boon to Developers Microsoft is calling Windows 7 the perfect platform for developers. The company has made advances in connectivity, mobility, natural interfaces, graphics and media support, as well as enhanced performance, flexibility, security and interoperability to help developers create better applications.
