In an interview with eWEEK, former MySQL CEO Marten Mickos says there's no rational argument for preventing Oracle from acquiring all of Sun, including MySQL with its open-source relational database software. The European Commission, the antitrust arm of the 27-nation European Union, apparently will lodge the objection because the deal includes the freely available and popular MySQL Web database, and the EC sees a major conflict of interest in the world's largest commercial database company owning its largest open-source competitor.
- Two prominent European business publications, the U.K.'s
Financial Times and Germany's

Oracle withdraws its petition to obtain antitrust clearance to do business in Russia after its acquisition of Sun Microsystems. The Federal Antimonopoly Service of Russia requires that once it is notified of a merger or acquisition that may infringe upon antitrust laws, the companies involved have a maximum of 90 working days to complete the deal. Oracle does not believe the acquisition will be sanctioned by EC regulators within the 90-day window.
- The European Commission's roadblock slowing the Oracle acquisition of Sun

Analysis: Industry experts have varying opinions on whether Oracle should divest itself of MySQL so: a) it can conclude the $7.4 billion Sun Microsystems acquisition, and b) satisfy people who are concerned that Oracle will own a database monopoly. But most agree on one thing: No one really knows what Oracle's intentions for MySQL are.
- As of Oct. 24, Oracle has been unable to convince a key European
Commission antitrust regulator that it will develop and promote the
freely available, open-source MySQL database as well as it would one of
its homegrown -- and much more expensive -- parallel database products.

According to a new survey of 481 members of the Independent Oracle Users Group by Unisphere Research and Ntirety, the number of Oracle technology professionals near or surpassing the $100,000 mark in their base salaries has increased.

Still, that doesn't mean Oracle technology professionals didn't feel any strain more than a quarter have seen some impact on their day-to-day jobs. About 16 percent saw their jobs restructured to incorporate more responsibilities, and four percent say they were moved to another part of the business.
