IBM Building Zero-Emission Data Centers IBM is working to deliver technology that could lead to zero-emission data centers, says an IBM researcher at the USENIX Large Installation System Administration conference. How to Achieve 40 Percent Energy Savings in Your Data Center Today's data center managers have many techniques to reduce their data center's energy consumption, but a mixture of techniques is often required to achieve energy saving targets. The key to judging success of any energy reduction strategy is the ability to accurately measure results along each step of the way. Here, Knowledge Center contributor Joe Polastre illustrates how power management technology can be used to achieve up to 40 percent energy savings in your data center. HP vs. Cisco: Polar Opposites in Data Center Strategies News Analysis: Cisco and Hewlett-Packard are coming at the next-generation data center with opposite strategies: Cisco wants to partner with the best available suppliers, and HP wants to be the one-stop shop for any enterprise. The general direction of all of this is toward cloud computing, and the question is who will become the go-to suppliers of new systems needed to run Internet-delivered services as older data centers get replaced during the next several years. Global Telecoms Set LTE Standard for Voice, SMS AT T, Verizon and 10 other carriers, equipment vendors and device manufacturers present a jointly developed technical profile for Long Term Evolution voice and SMS services. Top 10 Technologies to Consider for 2010 Each year at its October symposium in Orlando, Fla., Gartner publishes a report highlighting the top 10 technologies that could impact the enterprise market in the next three years. The research firm bases its selections on their potential to disrupt IT or business, the demand for investing considerable dollars in a technology, as well as the risk for companies that come late to a particular technology. Some of these selections are duplicated each year, while others knock previous entries out of the batch. Heading into 2010, here are Gartner's top 10 strategic technologies that companies should consider as they prepare their business plans for the new year. HP Unveils Converged Data Center Strategy HP’s Converged Infrastructure Architecture relies heavily on the company’s own technology, a departure from the partner-heavy data center initiatives from such rivals as Cisco, Dell and IBM. The HP strategy includes hardware, software and services to create an infrastructure that brings together computing, storage, networking and management resources into a single pool designed to help increase businesses’ agility and efficiency and drive down operation and maintenance costs in the data center. Perot Systems Becomes Dell Services Dell completes its $3.9 billion offer for Perot Systems, which will now be known as Dell Services. The move gives Dell a significantly larger services business with which to compete against IBM and Hewlett-Packard. Having Perot in the fold increases not only Dell's services capabilities but also its customer base. Neon Updates zPrime Product Aimed at IBM Mainframes Neon Enterprise Software upgrades its zPrime software product, which enables businesses to more easily cut their mainframe costs by moving more workloads from IBM's central mainframe processor onto less expensive specialty engines. The software comes at a time when rivals are complaining about IBM's dominance of the mainframe market and federal investigators reportedly are looking into IBM's business practices. The Internet: 40 Years of Breathtaking Innovation What has become the Internet was started 40 years ago when computer scientists at UCLA made the first host-to-host connection to the Stanford Research Institute. From there, there's been no looking back. ICANN Moves Ahead with Multilingual Domains The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers unanimously approves the use of non-Latin scripts such as Hindi and Hebrew in web addresses. The vote comes after years of dispute over how non-Latin characters would impact the security and stability of the domain naming system. Alcatel-Lucent Rolls Out Smaller Routers Alcatel-Lucent bridges a gap in its IP router portfolio with two small form-factor routers armed with the company's own FP2 chip set and the operating system used on its other routers. Tilera Talks 100-Core Processor Tilera, which already has 36- and 64-core processors on the market, is announcing its third-generation products, Tile-Gx, which includes plans for a 100-core processor. The chip will appear in 2011. Tilera officials hope the high-core count in its processors will help give the company traction in a space dominated by Intel and AMD, which currently are looking at eight-core processors. Sun Talks Up Solaris for Intel 'Nehalem EX' Chip Sun Microsystems officials are touting the work Sun and Intel have done over the past two years to ensure that Solaris works seamlessly with Intel's chip microarchitecture code-named Nehalem. Intel officials have said they expect servers powered by the eight-core Nehalem EX processor to begin appearing on the market in early 2010. Sun says Solaris has been able to take advantage of the various power, cooling, virtualization and management features in the upcoming Xeon processors. Union Group Seeks Wider Probe of IBM Executives Alliance@IBM, which is looking to unionize IBM’s U.S. work force, is asking the SEC and DOJ to investigate all IBM executives in the wake of hardware chief Robert Moffat’s arrest in connection with a $25 million insider trading scheme. Alliance@IBM also is running a poll asking people whether IBM executives should be investigated. HP, Nvidia Team Up in HPC Project HP and Nvidia are key technology providers in a project that will use the combined strengths of CPUs and GPUs in an experimental HPC system. The project, which aims to create two innovative HPC systems, is being overseen by a Georgia Tech researcher. The initial system, which will be deployed in 2010, will use hundreds of Intel-based HP products and Nvidia’s new CUDA architecture, code-named “Fermi.” Beleaguered Sun Forced to Lay Off 3,000 More Employees In an 8-K filing with the SEC, Sun says its board approved a new strategic plan that it said would better align the company's resources with its strategic business objectives, a plan that includes laying off 3,000 workers during the next year. New IBM VMControl Eases Management of Virtualized Environments IBM’s VMControl software for enterprises is aimed at giving businesses greater control of their data centers. The software, combined with IBM’s Tivoli products, brings together physical and virtualized resources—from servers to storage to networking devices—into a single pool, which can then be easily allocated depending on the workload demands. The resource pool can be managed from a single point, and can include virtualized systems from other vendors. Oracle, Cisco on Path to Challenge IBM, HP in Enterprise Data Centers News Analysis: Oracle and Cisco Systems are working on entirely separate, but similar tracks in long-term efforts to become full-service systems providers on par with IBM and Hewlett-Packard. Oracle, a 32-year-old vendor of database and enterprise application software, will get a lot closer to that goal if it gets final regulatory clearance to close its $7.4 billion acquisition of server and storage manufacturer Sun Microsystems. Meanwhile, networking equipment vendor Cisco Systems, at 25, is focusing on its Unified Computing System initiative to expand its presence and influence in corporate data centers. IBM Executive Gave Inside Information About IBM, Sun, AMD, Say Investigators Robert Moffat, head of IBM's hardware business, is accused of giving inside information to a New York hedge fund manager and friend about IBM's own finances as well as about AMD and Sun Microsystems. Wiretaps were a key tool in bringing the case together, according to court records. Moffat, a 31-year IBM veteran, was placed on leave following his arrest Oct. 16. 25 Things You Might Not Know About IBM's Smarter Planet Strategy IBM's & Smarter Planet& initiative has loftier aspirations than your typical corporate strategy. Big Blue says the world is becoming instrumented (by 2010, there will be a billion transistors per human, each one costing one ten-millionth of a cent); more interconnected (a trillion networked things); and more intelligent (thanks to algorithms and powerful systems that can analyze mountains of data to make decisions and to take actions). IBM aims to provide the technology that can connect the systems running the world, making the planet smarter: with less traffic, healthier food, cleaner water, safer cities. Here are 25 things you might not have known about IBM's & Smarter Planet& initiative. IBM's Smarter Planet strategy nears its first anniversary as eWEEK publishes this slide show. |
