FAA Issues Post-Mortem Report on Flight-Plan System Failure
The culprit of the FAA 4-hour flight-plan system failure was eventually determined to be a routing error in the software configuration inside a telecom router link at the FAA's Salt Lake City data distribution hub, pushing the router offline. Here is a detailed point-by-point timeline, supplied to eWEEK by the FAA and the Professional Aviation Safety Specialists union.

Ciena to Buy Nortel's Optical Networking, Carrier Ethernet Unit
The deal, which includes $530 million in cash, will give Ciena the products, platforms and IP that are used by Nortel in the business. Ciena's deal is a step in Nortel's decision to dismantle much of its business since filing for bankruptcy protection earlier in 2009. Several other vendors, including Avaya, Nokia Siemens and Telefon, have bought other Nortel units, such as the enterprise and wireless businesses.

The Story Behind the FAA Flight-Plan System Crash
When a Salt Lake City router went offline, only government telecom contractor Harris knew that the backup card was not immediately available and one technician had access to where it was kept. Meanwhile, hundreds of aircraft and thousands of passengers were thrown off schedule as the lack of an FAA filing system left pilots submitting flight plans manually.

Riverbed to Bring WAN Optimization to Public Clouds
WAN optimization vendor Riverbed in 2010 will begin rolling out products designed to improve application performance and storage capabilities in public cloud environments, such as Amazon’s EC2. Among the products will be a Riverbed Steelhead software offering designed for public clouds. Riverbed demonstrated some of these capabilities at an event in New York.

Brocade Offers High-Performance, Efficient Ethernet Switch
Brocade is looking to give service providers a switch that will offer the performance they want in a compact and energy-efficient form factor. The NetIron CER 2000 Series switch offers 1 Gigabit Ethernet and 10G Ethernet capabilities in a 1U form factor with almost three times the performance of a comparable Cisco switch while taking up 33 percent less space and consuming 66 percent less power, Brocade officials say.

SEC Probing Insider Trading in HP-3Com Deal: Report
A jump in options call trading for 3Com in the hours leading up to HP’s announcement of a $2.7 billion bid for networking company 3Com is prompting SEC regulators to investigate whether there was insider trading, according to Bloomberg. In addition, 3Com faces two shareholder lawsuits from investors who say HP’s offer is too low. HP is hoping to adding 3Com to its networking business to better compete with Cisco.

Combined HP and 3Com Will Be Credible Threat to Cisco
Even as it was building up its ProCurve networking business, HP was still missing the core data center switch that would enable it to compete more closely with Cisco. HP’s $2.7 billion deal for 3Com will help close that hole, plus give it greater network security technology through 3Com subsidiary TippingPoint and greater reach in China, analysts said. It also will force other networking players, including Juniper, Extreme and Brocade, to figure out how they will handle a more formidable HP, they said.

HP Gets Networking, Security, VOIP, China from 3Com Acquisition
Hewlett-Packard's $2.7 billion bid for 3Com will enable HP to fill some holes in its ProCurve product portfolio as it continues to challenge Cisco Systems in the $40 billion networking space, and as the two sides collide in the burgeoning competition for converged data center solutions. According to some analysts, Cisco owned about 52 percent of the networking market, while HP and 3Com were a distant second and third, followed by a host of other vendors. Combined, HP and 3Com will have about 20 percent of the market, making it a solid No. 2 to Cisco. The deal also adds to HP's unified communications story and gives it greater traction in the important Chinese market.

HP Releases Solid Fiscal Numbers After 3Com Announcement
HP released preliminary fiscal fourth-quarter numbers in the wake of its announcement that it is buying networking equipment vendor 3Com for $2.7 billion. HP officials say revenues for the quarter will be 12 percent higher than the previous quarter, but 8 percent less than the same period last year. HP is scheduled to release its final quarterly numbers Nov. 23.

HP to Buy 3Com for $2.7B
Hewlett-Packard is moving to expand its ProCurve networking business by buying 3Com for $2.7 billion, putting it in a better position to compete with Cisco Systems. The deal, which is expected to close in the first half of 2010, will give HP a greater networking presence in the enterprise, stronger network security capabilities and a larger presence in China. It also will help HP augment its converged data center solutions.

Cisco CEO Chambers Offers Cautious Optimism
In announcing Cisco Systems' solid quarterly earnings, Cisco CEO John Chambers says the economic recovery in the IT industry is picking up momentum. However, Chambers warns that it could be a slow recovery hindered by setbacks. Cisco generated $9 billion in revenue in the quarter, a 13 percent decline over 2008 but a better showing than analysts had expected.
