Cisco CEO Chambers Offers Cautious Optimism In announcing Cisco Systems' solid quarterly earnings, Cisco CEO John Chambers says the economic recovery in the IT industry is picking up momentum. However, Chambers warns that it could be a slow recovery hindered by setbacks. Cisco generated $9 billion in revenue in the quarter, a 13 percent decline over 2008 but a better showing than analysts had expected. Riverbed Mobile WAN Optimization Appliance Supports Windows 7 Riverbed's enhanced Steelhead Mobile 3.0 appliance can now accelerate the performance of Windows 7 and 64-bit computing systems, and also enables mobile users to share optimized data with their branch office colleagues who use Riverbed's Steelhead appliance. In addition, Web applications can now run up to 60 times faster with the Steelhead Mobile 3.0 device. Crescendo Offers Twitter Alerts in New App Service Controller Crescendo Networks is rolling out a new application service controller, the AppBeat SC, that enables users to receive alerts in a number of ways, including via Twitter and e-mail. In addition, users have the option of allowing Crescendo support staff to monitor their Twitter accounts for alerts. In addition to the service controller, Crescendo also is unveiling a high-end app delivery controller device. Juniper Unveils New Networking Hardware, Software Juniper Networks details what its CEO called the company's vision for the next decade. In order to compete against the likes of Cisco Systems, the Juniper vision includes a new chip set, new routers within the MX product line and updates to its Junos software. In addition to traditional networking, Juniper is looking to expand into the enterprise data center market and the cloud. Dell, Juniper Creating Networking Equipment Partnership Dell and Juniper Networks form a partnership allowing Dell to resell Juniper's routers, switches, gateway and software. In addition, Dell and Juniper plan to develop products for data centers that rely on virtualization technology. Earlier in 2009, Dell announced a partnership with Brocade to better compete against Cisco Systems and Hewlett-Packard. Juniper Networks Impresses While Extreme Networks Reorganizes In the frenetic world that is the networking space, Juniper Networks announces solid third-quarter financial numbers while CEO Kevin Johnson says the company will not follow Cisco Systems on the acquisition trail. Meanwhile, rival Extreme Networks announces a reorganization that includes 70 layoffs and a new CEO. The moves come shortly after Cisco's decision to buy Starent Networks and Extreme's WLAN partnership with Motorola. Riverbed Brings Apple Mac, Citrix XenApp into WAN Optimization Fold With the release of its RiOS 6.0 software, Riverbed improves band-width and response times for Apple Mac users, which is important given the growing presence of Macs in the enterprise, according to Riverbed officials. At the same time, RiOS 6.0 improves performance and bandwidth for users of Citrix’s XenApp application virtualization technology. Cisco Says Visual, Communications Apps Are Driving Broadband Traffic In a survey of more than 20 top service providers, Cisco Systems finds that video and other visual applications now constitute 30 percent of traffic running through service provider networks, feeding into Cisco's assertion that such visual apps will dominate networks by 2013. In addition, the top 1 percent of broadband subscribers worldwide generate 10 percent of the traffic. IBM Expands Partnerships with Voltaire, QLogic IBM is partnering with Voltaire to bring the networking vendor’s new Vantage 8500 10GbE switches to its own System Cluster 1350, a cluster offering that is built on BladeCenter or iDataPlex systems. In addition, IBM is integrating QLogic’s 8100 FCoE adapters into its Power Systems as a way of offering enterprises a converged networking fabric that can reduce costs and complexity in the data center. Net Neutrality Comments Pile Up at FCC With the Federal Communications Commission poised to approve new network neutrality rules for public discussion Oct. 22, opponents and proponents just can't say enough in their filings with the FCC, even if no one has actually seen the proposed rules. Cisco Rolls Out Next-Generation ISR Portfolio For use with such rapidly growing technologies as HD video and online collaboration, Cisco Systems is unveiling the next generation of its hugely successful ISR router family, the ISR G2. Cisco officials say the new routers are the first steps in the company's Borderless Networks strategy, which calls for being able to deliver any service to any user anywhere and on any device. Ciena Gets OK for Bid for Nortel Optical Network Business Ciena has gotten court approval for its $532 million “stalking horse” bid for Nortel’s Optical Networking and Carrier Ethernet Business. An auction is expected in November. This is the latest business being sold by Nortel, which filed for bankruptcy earlier this year and is selling off its businesses to raise money. Avaya, Nortel Siemens and Ericsson already have bought other pieces of Nortel. N.C. Couple Charged with Stealing $23M from Cisco A husband and wife were arrested by federal authorities for running a fraud that cost Cisco more than $23 million in replacement parts. According to federal investigators, the couple, using false businesses and names, had Cisco send replacement parts to private UPS boxes. They then sold the parts and deposited the payments into an account bearing the name of their company, Synergy Communications. A third person—a Synergy employee—also was charged, but has not yet been arrested, according to federal authorities. Cisco to Acquire Starent for $2.9B as Buying Spree Continues Cisco is buying wireless infrastructure company Starent for $2.9 billion, the latest significant acquisition this year, following such purchases as Pure Digital and Tandberg. The move gives Cisco a greater wireless offering in a competitive space that includes the likes of Alcatel-Lucent, and comes as Cisco predicts mobile Internet traffic will double every year through at least 2013. Ellison: Oracle Not Interested in Brocade Oracle CEO Larry Ellison reportedly told shareholders that Oracle is not interested in buying networking vendor Brocade, which is rumored to be for sale. Oracle and HP were among the companies reportedly interested in buying Brocade. IBM, Cisco and Dell are other names that have been mentioned as possible buyers. NetScout Gives Visibility into Virtualized Environments NetScout is rolling out its nGenius Virtual Agent, which gives businesses greater visibility into the applications running within their virtualized environments. Virtualization has made it more difficult to monitor, analyze and troubleshoot applications, which can reside within virtual machines on a single physical system and can be moved between virtual machines. The new NetScout technology gives businesses real-time visibility into those environments. Extreme Networks Unveils New Networking Modules Extreme Networks is readying a new family of networking modules, aimed at the wiring closet level, for its BlackDiamond 8800 chassis. The 8500 series joins existing modules that are aimed at other layers up to the data center. The new family of modules will enable businesses to run networking devices that touch on the wiring closet, core and data center levels from within the same chassis. Brocade Sale to HP, Oracle or Other Player Would Make Sense: Analysts Analysts say selling networking vendor Brocade to a major player such as HP, Oracle, IBM, Cisco or Dell could make sense for the companies involved, particularly given the increasing competition around unified data center solutions, which require a networking element, according to analysts. Brocade, which reportedly has been put on the market, has terrific products but needs a better distribution channel, said one analyst. However, being bought one of the top-tier vendors could put other partnerships at risk. HP Adds Voltaire UFM to Cluster Portfolio Hewlett-Packard is including Voltaire's Unified Fabric Manager software in its Unified Cluster Portfolio for high-performance scale-out data centers. Voltaire's UFM software is used in conjunction with its InfiniBand switches to give businesses better management capabilities for their complex data center environments.
