Verizon tried a Times Square promotion for its Droid smartphone on Nov. 6, the same day as the devices release. Despite the small number of people who turned out for the event, Verizon and Google are hoping that the Android-powered smartphone will attract massive amounts of customers, and justify pre-release advertising that positioned the Droid as a robust competitor to Apple's iPhone. Some early reviews seemed to put both iPhone and Droid on relatively even ground in the capabilities category.
- Verizon must have booked its Times Square promotion of the Droid
smartphone well before the Yankees won the World Series, or they might have

News Analysis: Google again finds itself in a no-win situation, this time with Google Dashboard. Some claim Google collects too much data in Dashboard and others say it doesn't provide enough. Dashboard summarizes the data from the Web services associated with a user's account. Dashboard, which can be found here, or under the Personal Setting section under My Account, will list how many Gmail conversations we have going, how many Google Docs we have, Google Calendar appointments, and even Web history if we've enabled it. But it does not include detail Google collects on us from its server logs, cookies and ads.
-

Now that users have their hands on Windows 7, it's time to secure it. They could always use solutions from Microsoft, like Security Essentials, but in many cases, third-party applications do a much better job of ensuring a system is kept secure.

Third-party security apps for Windows 7 can be free or paid. In either case, users can find effective security applications to keep their data more secure. However, it's important to remember that some apps are more effective than others and that in no way can all of these applications keep the user's data totally secure. But the first step is to find the security app that works best for the users needs. This eWEEK slide show looks at ten third-party applications that will make Windows 7 more secure.
- ...
