With New York and California both considering proposals to crack down on spyware, the federal government is facing pressure to pass its own law.
“If the states are busy writing laws and particularly if theyre writing inconsistent laws or laws that strongly interfere with certain markets, that certainly would strengthen the case for federal legislation,” said Howard Beales, the Federal Trade Commissions top consumer protection official, in an interview.
Utah is the only state with an anti-spyware law.
