10 Products (and Processes) That Should Be Put Out To Pasture

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” applies to IT as well as to life in general.
That said, there are many products in the enterprise that are starting to show
their age. And, if they aren’t now, they will be with technologies such as IPv6
and unified communications coming down the pike,
not to mention rising energy costs. Here’s a list of products that
deserve a hard once-over.

First on the list: these stupid slide shows

Can you just get rid of these stupid slide shows and have normal text based articles?
These slides add no value and are obnoxious, user un-friendly.
Please assign the genius who came up with this nonsense somewhere else.

No offense, but I agree - the slide show makes it very hard to read as it tends to go to the next slide before I finish reading. I think folks can navigate on their own.

Each and every time these slide show article appear they move too fast for many of us as we are older than the young "upstarts" (Said with a smile) who can read a bit faster than some of us... Please allow for more time before allowing the automatic "next slide" to come up...

As to the article it is "fair" at best because it does not go into depth as it should for some of the newer people who actually are older in age... and developing and understanding may require inculcation into the brain pan with more articlulation on the author of these slide shows. Sounds a bit crazy, I know... But just think to whom your audience is... and then may be you'll get the idea!

Have to agree with all of the other comments here. Just can't read fast enough before the dang thing goes on to the next page. If you are going to have a slide show format, could you at least insert a pause button???????

I open several links at a time from any given news letter and then go look at them when I am ready. With this dumb slide show format, quite often the show is at the end before I get to view it, have to restart it, and typically have to turn of the "Auto" feature so I can read at my pace, and advance when I'm ready.

Dump the slide show and get back to Text - put the graphics on the side - if you must have them - but make them load LAST!

I definitely agree about the slide show. I load the link from my newsletter, go pour a cup of coffee, and by the time I sit back down to check things out, the page is already at the last slide. Don't AUTO start. I can run a slide show too.

  Slide shows
  By: Bill
at: 03-31-08 @ 11:31 am EST

I have an online business that sells over $4 million annually. I use the web constantly. I like to be up-to-date on how products are marketed, and where technology is going. And I am simply astounded at the lack of judgment I see on many websites. Here are some of my "pet peeves:"

1. Audio that starts playing unsolicited and without warning. Startles everyone in my office and is personally embarrassing. (What's the matter with the boss - why is he playing on the computer?) I'm trying to find a tool that will allow me to mark such sites so that I will get a warning every time a link attempts to take me to one of them.

2. Slide shows that start playing without any obvious warning. (Having a big control just to the side of the slide show is NOT an obvious warning.) I REALLY hate these.

3. Advertisements that pop up or slide across the screen. Or "intro" advertising displays that can be skipped after one finds the place to click. Advertisements that rest peacefully at the side of the screen (as in Google Adwords) are fine. In fact, I like them. I've found useful stuff in these.

When someone is dumb enough to use something like the above, they are either too dumb to realize the negative impression these things make, or else they simply don't care. Either way, I make a mental note NEVER to do business with them. I don't like doing business with anyone that is stupid or inconsiderate, because I know I won't be treated well. I like businesses that show by their websites and their advertising that they are thinking clearly and value and respect their visitors.

You are SOOOO correct! Back in the '90's (before there were pop-up blockers) I had a stupid Toyota car driving all over the web-page I was trying to read (I think it was Yahoo page). This went on for about a week. It was so damn annoying that I emailed Toyota about it. Their response was one of complete ignorance of any runaway Corolla traversing my web-pages. I have purchased 11 cars since then and have NEVER stepped foot in a Toyota dealer. I used to own Toyotas, but the whole incident made me feel the same way ... that they had little concern for anyone. From what I've seen, about half of the advertising out there makes me wonder "what were they thinking?!?!"

No offense dude, but if you bought 11 cars since the early 90's either you're rich or you need to start buying cars that last longer, like a Corolla and not a crappy american car...

How Ironic... This slide show should be put out to pasture. I was referred to this place via a news letter to which I subscribe. From now on whenever I see eWEEK.com in a link I will think e-'WEAK'.

If the show was launched inside of a new, CLEAN window I would probably consider browsing the slide show archive.

The forced slide show is obnoxious and annoying, but it does little to disguise the lack of depth of the article. Anyone can come up with an inane list of "10 things" and publish them without explanation or justification. What is your objective here? Mine was just to be informed, but instead my time was wasted and I was irritated enough to respond.

Say goodbye to find content in search engines - how they will index streamed content? tags will be not enough to a good indexing...

If anyone (eWeek Editor) actually reads these comments, they will see that the SLIDESHOW IDEA NEEDS TO STOP!
It doesn't work on so many levels. Even if the article is interesting, I just end up annoyed.

I am a big girl and can read on my own...and decide when it is time to go to the next slide. Your slideshow timing is completely off.

The next time I get an e-mail from "eWEEK Editor's Pick" I'm gonna think twice before I open it....

  RE Slideshows
  By: Anonymous Reader
at: 03-31-08 @ 4:08 pm EST

Someone at EWeek reads the posts, no doubt more than one; and the interested readers in Sales and Marketing have long turned a deaf ear to the constant complaints against the slideshow format. Every "turned page" on a site translates to dollars in someone's pocket, and the slideshow is a compelling opportunity for EWeek to build ad revenue. All our kvetching about the lame click-thru-to-see-the-next-sentence format just tells the marketing guys that they've hit their target - bullseye ! The way to stop the "madness" is to stop with all the clicking, and that means US -- the faithful clickers. When the ad revenue drops, the Marketing crew will have to come up with another goose to lay those little clicking eggs. We can only hope the new format won't be worse than the slideshow it replaces.

Why slide shows are a great idea
  By: gardoglee
at: 03-31-08 @ 10:52 am EST

Let me take a great leap of speculation here. I'm guessing that each time you use the slide show format, each slide we pass through counts as a hit on eWeek, and rushing each reader through eleven slides was a way some editor thought they would up their hit count and get an annual bonus. Or do you have some other plausible explanation for continuing something which is obviously unwanted by a large number of users?

Somewhere somebody is getting a lot of bucks for each inconvenience and accidental click. But guess what... If anyone compares the ad budget and click counts to real sales, they're going to find it didn't really sell any more product! In other words, the ads CHASED AWAY the customers. OOPS!

And, with all the disabled people who must rely on screen readers, and mobile users on handheld devices, there are huge segments of the population these ads are turning away. As devices proliferate (for example email-to-voice car navigation systems etc)) there are going to be more and more people who can't view this content!

First of all, those of you criticizing the slide show format should realize it is much easier for H1-B workers with limited English to understand, and for outsourced web content producers in India to create. So be quiet, this is PROGRESS. Roughly 3000 years ago Egyptians abandoned pictogram based writing for demotic script because pictograms are inefficient. However, we know better so we dumb down everything this way. As to content, do these guys live in the real world? Firmware updates, "just to keep current"?!?! Yeah, right. Lets destroy our production environment by screwing up the firmware with some "fix" for a problem we don't have. Replace laptop batteries before being asked? So much for green computing. Somebody should take these guys on a tour around Sudbury, where a lot of the nickel for these batteries comes from. Wow. Get real and get text.

  Manual Slide Shows?
  By: contrazz
at: 03-31-08 @ 11:40 am EST

There seem to be a lot of complaints about the speed of the automation. I agree that it's too fast for me. I'm a big boy and I can read at the speed at which I want to read. I stop the automation and run the slides manually. Not terribly difficult ...

I do wish the automation weren't turned on by default. I opened the latest slide show in a new tab - but not the front tab - and the tab showed the viewer chugging away in the background.

I agree that a sizable fraction of the material presented this way could be presented as a text list. On the other hand, sometimes the slides really do enhance the experience. Seems like someone just needs to discern when the slides really add something ... and when they are simply about getting more ads displayed.

10 reasons we hate these slide shows!
  By: Danny
at: 03-31-08 @ 11:51 am EST

1. We can't read that fast.
2. We don't like to wait for the next slide to load.
3. We like to read at our speed, not yours.
4. We don't want to have to keep going back.
5. Some days, the content is absurd (like Apple buying Google or vice versa), others are actually halfway decent.
6. We have to endure all of the ads loading.
7. We have to pause the slideshow every time we view one instead of it letting us go at our own pace.
8. Did I say we can't read that fast?
9. The phone just rang, now which slide was I on?
10. We can't find the unsubscribe button on the email that sends this "news"

Also, why does it always take 3 tries for the image verification to work?

eWeek continues to blithely crank out these worthless slideshows; 99% of comments are complaints about the format and not the content, and yet they persist.

Instead of technologies that are still relevant and effective, perhaps some editors should be put out to pasture, hmmm?

Completely concur with other comments. The slideshow format is annoying and appears to exist to primarily utilize a graphic designer's time. Put the same content into a one page story...you'll save time and money and, more important, so will I!

I generally will not click on a slideshow presentation...you're losing your readership!

Glad to see a chance to finally comment about how obnoxious these slide shows are.

Letterman doesn't use this much band width with his Top Ten lists (unless you watch the video).

Some of these are mildly interesting or mildly amusing. But the format really stinks on the web. And they are really difficult to pass on to others.

I find these to be a cool way to present the material, but I bet 90% of you also love the way Vista is the second coming; just like ME was to 98. Bitch Bitch Bitch, go get laid or something. Sad to watch all that experience be experienced again. Used to be there were folks who thought about the impressions one might have from something delivered to another. So glad to see those folks are now retiring and moving on. Now instead, we have to go though this type of inane "lesson" all over again. If it is not for the H1-Bs and it is not targeted to those still accomplishing things who have little time so it is rushed, then it must be the new hires grand idea! that we certainly would not want to stifle (after all - the parents probably didn't). Your reporting used to be very trustworthy and factual. If these types of "slide shows" are an example of your quality - then I will not renew. You of all people should know that the "news" is duplicated and available elsewhere and with this continious antics it is available elsewhere with a bit more class...

Sorry to disagree with such august company.

I think the slides are a more "memorable" way to present information...If I'm wrong, let all these gripey folks de-install their own PowerPoint licenses, and they can just present their ideas to committees, prospects, boards and stockholders in boresome white paper texzzzzzzt.

90% of the udience's gripes would *never *have *surfaced* if you had simply put clickable Back/Forward arrows under each slide.

Do that and all will be well, my son!

Memorable yes, like getting a flat tire.

Maybe if you had a mobile device, you'd see how horrible this page looks, or how it refreshes before you can see its content.

As for PowerPoint being so wonderful, I think that only holds true for dull meetings which would even be improved with commercial breaks!

Ditch the slideshows already. No one looks at the ads and all you do is frustrate your clientele. If anyone else here remembers the "Hallmark Hall of Fame" the reason we still remember is because the whole ad campaign was at the start and end and you could watch the show in peace. That is a concept that is due for a revival.

  Slides REALLY Anger MOBILE USERS
  By: Anonymous Reader
at: 03-31-08 @ 9:20 pm EST

These slideshows really TURN OFF MOBILE USERS like those of use who use an iPod Touch to surf. Not that everybody uses these sort of things today, but a lot of the techies who read these columns do. If we were trailing edge, we wouldn't be into eWeek. I imagine if this column were unreadible on a BlackBerry, you'd be angering all your remaining readers.
WE ARE NOT FOOLS. If these dopey interrupting ads make these top 10 lists unreadable, we won't bother. And NOBODY will see the ads. Ever wonder why TV is dying, or closer to home, why Ziff-Davis PC Magazine is on the rocks? Because somebody thought the customer was the advertiser, no the reader or viewer.

P.S. For all those ad people who like the current annoying setup, you are in the minority on this issue. And the person who figures out how to deliver the content and or ads without aggrivating the customers is going to eat your lunch. Hint: maybe simple old fashioned static ads aren't so bad. Nor would be simple sponsorship, as in NO annoying ads but just calling the top ten the "HP top 10".

Two comments:
1. Get rid of the cutesy slick, slimy, slide shows. These are using disk space and bandwidth on the server and on the internet and not everyone has real broadband. Some of us have to use satellite internet.
2. If your comments are only about the enterprise, maybe. But to all of you city boys who work only enterprise shops, I hate to tell you that there are many SMBs some of which are Medical and Dentistry which need servers but have only one database application but that application database is very large. Your suggestions are a bit stupid. Why? Well there are many legacy apps running in Windows, there are VB tools that create databases that run in Windows, and these situations create a fair amount of business for a rural IP Pro. Virtualization is only valuable when there is surplus server space and applications which need it from a lot of varied workstations and laptops. For the real world using POS, Dental Software, Accounting Software, Drafting Software, areas where no VPN is used or needed, the server is not wasted, in fact it is built to order. The main problem tends to be protection of the database and in short this means use of RAID, Disk to disk backup, Gigabit net speed, and NO INTERNET on the database server and workstations. To protect a valuable database is too critical and too expensive for most customers. We can always use an older workstation for internet connection and connect the downloaded data via the network when necessary.............

Slide shows are good for Ad. revenue
  By: Justin in Calgary
at: 04-01-08 @ 1:38 pm EST

The slide shows while a pain and probably nice little earners for generating Ad. revenue. By displaying the show at a fast pace, more pages are displayed and more ads are rendered.

One can pause the slide show if you are able to quickly locate the little slide controls.

Alas eWeek is fast becoming a large advertising page with the odd bit of content sprinkled around the page in the darkest corners.

When will eWeek outgrow their crappy slideshow presentations??

A better presentation would be to keep the title, then have it be a one-page article, with 1-15 bullet points and 1-3 explanatory sentences per bullet point.

eWeek, don't you even notice that people hate your slideshows, and would probably much prefer the presentation idea given above??

Probably not.

The slide shows are awkward and interfere with the content of the message. Most annoying is having to recenter every slide because they don't center themselves on my 17" LCD screen set to 1024x768. Add a text only option in outline form. Slide shows are so annoying I only attempt those that speak directly to an issue I am dealing with.

How about dumping the arrogant call center lackeys in India and instead offering people who can speak English that isn't garbled over a 3rd rate VOIP line?

Why have IT professionals being paid $100K a year and up sit for hours listening to untrained, heavily accented hacks read from a script?

A good example of great American management at work.

I like the slide shows. We do a lot of consulting for large SMB companies and it is kind of neat to pull some images and use for presentations to potential clients. Some graphics in the slide makes it easy for them [the clients] to understand. Once I have an acceptance from the client on the project I then create a work packet of the project [with different graphics] so the technical people can understand. There is an acceptance procedure define for the client to validate the work of the consultant so most of the time, all goes OK. In fact it was a slide that gave me the idea of how to cluster two(2) Microsoft SBS servers together which won one of Microsoft top technology innovation awards.

So I am OK with the slide shows

As it was the first time I have visited this site what got me here was an advert from CodeProject saying 'Products that should be put out to pasture - 11. Webpages that auto-refresh for no reason'

Then, without even realising I was in a slide show the page auto-refreshed (for no reason). I thought it was a wind up and am not really interested in a site that has no idea about user interfaces.

And your image verification has half an 'S' at the end, Should I include it or not????

Having the slides change on their own is extremely annoying, compounded by the fact that the loading time for the pages was pretty long. There is NO reason why a simple list of ten things could not have been presented on one page. It's not like it matters but under no circumstances will I return to this site.

Your stupid slideshow starts out "“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” applies to IT as well as to life in general." but then hits Windows 2000 first? Aside from the fact that Vista IS BROKE and needs to be fixed, Win2K works just fine and having it around if you don't need to upgrade apps is fine. I worked for a company that's still running Win NT.

Next time, if you start with a premise, stick to it. Win2K ain't broke and I ain't fixing it.

There was a slide show here? Yeah, I saw the frames. Thought they were a bit excessive. But either my script blocker stopped the slide show from running, or I just read thru and moved to the next one before the site could...either way, I didn't see any 'forced' progression, just a bit of inefficient clicking on my part.

After reading about 40 or so comments with only 2 or 3 on the content, I scrolled to the bottom so I could just move on.

Well, I agree with a lot of the comments here that a plain text presentation would be better. I've looked at a couple of these slideshows and the graphics don't help and they take a long time to download...and when I go do something else and return later, the slideshow has automatically gone to the end, so I've missed it while trying to be more productive.
Maybe you could give an option for slideshow or plaintext versions and test how many people actually prefer the fancy graphics? It's possible they help some more visually-oriented people to process the information, but then again, maybe not.
