The drive’s integrated Thermal Guard prevents overheating in extreme temperatures, and the T3 comes with a three-year limited warranty.

Samsung announced the launch of the Portable SSD T3, a palm-sized, external solid state drive (SSD) that offers multi-terabyte (TB) storage capacity.

The company is offering a new 2TB T3 SSD, along with a wide range of capacity options, including 250 gigabyte (GB), 500GB, and 1TB.

Equipped with Samsung’s proprietary Vertical NAND (V-NAND) and SSD TurboWrite technology, the T3 drive boasts file transfers based on sequential read and write speeds of up to 450MB/s with a USB 3.1 interface.

"Consumers have become used to the fast-paced digital world we live in and have high expectations for storage when it comes to speed," Richard Leonarz, senior product marketing manager of memory and storage for Samsung Electronics America, told eWEEK. "The rise of 4K content and high-resolution photos, in particular, means consumers are increasingly looking to external storage solutions that do not require them to sacrifice capacity for speed."

Leonarz explained drives that enable fast file transfers are essential to content creators and business and IT professionals who are on-the-go and have large data transfer needs.

"With the Samsung Portable SSD T3, users save precious time and can quickly plug in to grab videos, presentations, photos, or other large multimedia files to present or share," he said.

He also noted it is important to design for speed and security without sacrificing style, which is why the Portable SSD T3 has a slim and compact design that makes it easy to take anywhere.

"As consumers travel, they want to access their data no matter the device or location," he said. "With portable drives, traveling is easy to carry and access your files without having to find WiFi faster than ever."

Unlike an external HDD, the SSDs do not have moving parts and so the T3 is better protected from damage or data loss due to bumps or drops, and features a new shock-resistant metal case and internal frame.

In addition, the drive’s integrated Thermal Guard prevents overheating in extreme temperatures, and the T3 comes with a three-year limited warranty.

Users can send data from the T3 to a PC and vice versa, access content on the T3 through mobile devices, and view the drive’s multimedia content on large-screen devices such as TVs.

Leonarz pointed out that consumers and business professionals are increasingly relying on external or cloud-based storage, however, users need more durability, faster transfer speeds and enhanced security.

"SSDs are the new era of external storage and Samsung is leading the charge," he said. "We will continue to meet demand from both consumers and enterprises for external SSDs with larger capacities, top-notch performance and improved compatibility in compact designs."
