Mobile and Wireless: Motorola Razr M: Hands-On With Latest Android Smartphone

Google-owned Motorola—a distinction made clear by the presence of Google Chairman Eric Schmidt—introduced three phones, the Razr M, the Razr HD and the Razr HD Maxx, at a Sept. 5 event in New York City. The latter two feature 4.7-inch displays—the Maxx adds a super-duper battery—while the Razr M features a 4.3-inch display and is arguably the device for Android fans who have lamented the challenge of holding or pocketing smartphones that have grown to roughly the size of gaming consoles. Motorola took its already-thin original Droid Razr and figured out how to remove essentially all of the border. The Razr M features its same display size but in a shorter, narrow form factor. Because we're used to borders being present, the Razr M is something of a surprise, if not a revelation, when turned on: a device that seems nearly as petite as some feature phones but with a display that offers 40 percent more screen area than the Apple iPhone 4S.

The Razr M runs Android Ice Cream Sandwich but will be upgraded to Jelly Bean later this year. Its 4.3-inch quarter-high-definition (qHD) Super AMOLED (active-matrix organic LED) Advanced display has a resolution of 540 by 960. It's now available for preorder from Verizon Wireless for $99.99 after a $50 mail-in contract and with a two-year contract.
