The appliance supports up to 10 channels of simultaneous high-definition footage streaming at 240 frames per second (FPS) in 720p.

Network-attached storage and IP surveillance solutions specialist Synology announced the launch of the DiskStation DS215j, a two-bay NAS server designed for home and personal users to manage data, stream media content and synchronize files on the cloud while keeping digital assets secure.

Currently shipping globally, the DS215j runs on DiskStation Manager (DSM) 5.1, an operating system that provides a host of applications to bring better productivity at work and offer a new level of multimedia experience.

DSM 5.1 also features Note Station, which lets users create thousands of digital notebooks, and access all of them from Web browsers or mobile devices, while Cloud Station can now sync with file-sharing and storage services OneDrive, Box, and hubiC.

The DS215j is powered by a dual-core processor with a floating-point unit (FPU) designed to handle multitasking and multimedia processing.

The platform upgrade enables the DS215j to deliver average read speeds of more than 111MB per second and average writes over 87MB per second, a 19 percent gain in writing compared with its predecessor, while keeping its power consumption as low as 13.4 watts in full operation and 5.3 watts when hard drives hibernate.

The addition of the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface further boosts its file-transfer speeds. By leveraging Synology Surveillance Station, the DS215j is also a full-featured network video recorder.

It supports up to 10 channels of simultaneous high-definition footage streaming at 240 frames per second (FPS) in 720p.

The DS215j also comes with two free IP camera licenses and supports up to 10 cameras, making it a potential surveillance solution for homes and small offices.

In addition, Synology's Central Management System (CMS) gives users tools for multi-server deployments.

The CMS is designed for multi-site and multi-server surveillance deployment, and provides surveillance personnel with a platform to monitor and manage surveillance deployment of different scales.

The CMS hierarchy consists of a CMS host server that has total control over all other recording servers across different locations.

On the security side, Synology's Security Advisor wizard performs a comprehensive analysis of system settings, password strength and network preferences, while AppArmor blocks malicious programs from accessing unauthorized system resources, while the new trust-level feature warns users when they attempt to install potentially harmful packages.

Earlier this month, the company introduced its newest Plus series DiskStations, the DS1515+ and DS1815+, multi-bay NAS servers that are designed to facilitate intensive data exchange, collaboration and reliable backups for small and midsize businesses (SMBs).

Featuring an Intel Atom processor C2000 family 2.4GHz quad-core processor with Intel AES New Instructions (AES-NI) encryption, as well as a RAM module expandable to 6GB for faster performance execution, the appliances are equipped with four Gigabit LAN ports supporting Link Aggregation and failover.
