Egnyte Steps Up With New Cloud SAN Package

We'll be talking a lot more about cloud storage in 2010 [as if we didn't talk about it last year]. A number of clever new companies are coming to the fore with good ideas in this space.

Egnyte is one of them. The Mountain View, Calif.-based newcomer specializes in building file servers for cloud computing. The news here is that it has released its first NAS product -- appropriately called Egnyte Local Cloud on Network Attached Storage.

Egnyte claims that this new package enables businesses to deploy a corporate-type file storage, sharing and backup system that combines the speed and security of a local file repository with the access, flexibility and unlimited storage capabilities of the Internet cloud.

Unlike online-only storage, Egnyte Local Cloud on NAS treats the online cloud and local cloud as synchronized active file repositories. This gives businesses the assurance that they always access the most current files from the office or on the road, Egnyte said.

The Egnyte Local Cloud on NAS solution is available now on the NetGear ReadyNAS series, as well as systems based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Novell's Suse Linux Enterprise Server. Egnyte is planning to support a high number of standard NAS devices.

Cloud storage is not all Amazon, Flickr or Iron Mountain. There are some good newcomers on the scene who've taken a look at what's available, added their own secret sauce, and brought new value to the proposition.
