NTT Develops Stamp-Sized 1GB Mobile Media

Forthcoming holographic read-only storage will be aimed at mobile devices.

Japans Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) said in February that it will commercialize a new type of read-only storage media that is the size of a postage stamp.

Called the Information-Multilayered Imprinted CArd, or Info-MICA, the new media stores data based on the technology of thin-film holography.

The company said it expects the new 1GB media to initially cost no more than 300 yen, or under $3. The drive has low power consumption and can be inexpensively mass produced.
