Seagate Unveils Solid-State Drive Product Family
Products include three solid-state drives and the X8 Accelerator, a storage class memory card.Storage solutions specialist Seagate Technology announced its latest portfolio of flash memory solutions, including its first client solid-state drive and its next-generation enterprise SSDs—the Seagate 600 SSD, 600 Pro SSD and 1200 SSD. The Seagate 600 SSD is designed to deliver faster boot-up speeds, shorter application load times and improved system responsiveness. Designed for ultrathin devices, the drive comes in a 2.5-inch form factor, features up to 480GB of capacity and incorporates a 6G-bps serial ATA (SATA) interface for fast data transfer rates. The 600 Pro SSD, an entry-level enterprise SATA SSD, is suited for cloud system builders, hyperscale data centers, cloud service providers, content delivery networks and virtualized environments. Utilizing 2.8 watts typical operating power, the drive reduces energy by automatically adjusting the power consumption to workload input/output (I/O) levels—using less power for lighter workloads. The drive, like the 600 SSD, comes in a 2.5-inch form factor, is available with up to 480GB of capacity and is equipped with a 6G-bps SATA interface. The 1200 SSD is available with up to 800GB capacity and comes in either a 1.8-inch or 2.5-inch form factor. The drive uses algorithms that optimize performance for frequently accessed data by prioritizing which storage operations, reads or writes, occur first and optimizing where it is stored. It also incorporates a dual-port 12G-bps SAS connector, which the company said provides 100 percent faster interface speeds over previous generations. In addition, it is backward-compatible with 6G-bps serial-attached SCSI (SAS) environments.
Rounding out the portfolio, Seagate also announced the X8 Accelerator, a storage-class memory Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) card powered by Virident, enabling the company to offer all interfaces including SATA and SAS solutions. The card’s x8 PCI Express Gen-2 interface enables it to deliver enhanced application performance in database and virtualization applications such as Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle Enterprise Server, MySQL and VMware.
