Data storage, though an extremely important aspect of our lives today, is not as sexy a topic as, say, smartphones or the latest, thinnest Ultrabooks. Long designed and sold as large, clunky boxes with little regard for fashion finesse, they were relegated to dark corners of offices or living rooms, stuffed under desks or buried beneath piles of paper. All that is changing. Whether they're larger, less mobile storage drives or super-slim portable devices, many of today's storage drives boast designs that push the envelope and make the drives fashion statements in the league of the smartphones, tablets and music players that dominate billboards and television ads. Manufacturers—from LaCie, working with world-famous designer Phillippe Starck and Porsche Design—to Buffalo Technology—are taking storage to new heights of fashion, and while most of them are opting for the minimal, modernist look, there are a few curves here and there. Take a look at some of the best and the brightest in storage system design.
