There’s been a great effort in the past few years to add some panache to storage drives of all types, be they Swiss Army knife USB sticks, rugged portable drives or sleek and sophisticated home storage devices. Over at storage specialist LaCie, the company has taken things to a whole new level by enlisting the talents of world-famous designer Philippe Starck, who has designed everything from hotels to furniture—and now a 4TB storage drive inspired by Ridley Scott’s seminal 1982 science fiction classic "Blade Runner." Protected by sturdy aluminum, the LaCie Blade Runner’s exterior shields the hard drive from overheating and offers high-speed USB 3.0 interface and cross-platform compatibility, as well as an LED power button in the form of Starck's signature symbol that glows to indicate activity. With only 9,999 produced, the Blade Runner is a limited edition hard drive aimed at design-conscience consumers looking for a statement piece in their home office, study or media room. The Blade Runner is equipped with 10GB of complimentary Wuala Secure Cloud Storage and backup software. It is available in a 4TB capacity through the company’s online store and specialty retailers for $299—although LaCie’s products page says the drive is currently unavailable.
