Toshiba Shipping New FIPS-Sanctioned SSDs in NetApp Arrays

The fast, new solid-state storage disks now are U.S. government-certified at the highest level of hardware security, offering fast output and low power consumption.

Toshiba America Electronic Components reported Oct. 25 that it has followed up the August launch of its Flashmatrix solid-state big data analytics server with a set of new government security-accredited solid-state SAS disks.

The Irvine, California-based company's new PX04S 12Gbit/s SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) SSDs, which are FIPS 140-2 Level 2 certified, are now shipping in NetApp hybrid FAS and E-Series systems.

The Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) Publication 140-2 is a U.S. government computer security standard used to accredit cryptographic modules. Toshiba has long been a key SSD supplier for NetApp FIPS-certified products.

With sequential read/write speeds of up to 1900 Mebibytes (MiB) per second/1100 MiBs per second, and random read/write performance of up to 270,000 input/output operations per second (IOPS), Toshiba claims the new SSDs provide the highest levels of speed and data security for customers requiring certified protection of their data.

The 12Gbit/s PX04S Enterprise SAS SSDs with FIPS certification are shipping now, the company said.

Flashmatrix, which will utilize the new-gen flash disks, is aimed specifically at the growing need for real-time, streaming analytics in distributed systems targeted at high data-intensive applications in manufacturing, finance, medical and security.

Last January, TAEC launched a set of new SSDs optimized specifically for read-heavy apps such as web servers, data warehousing, media streaming and video-on-demand. Flashmatrix fits the same specifics-oriented use-case mold as the others, according to the company.

The new generation of superconverged infrastructure features integrated compute, storage and network elements optimized for high performance. With its unusual architecture of NAND flash memory arranged in a matrix, Toshiba's Flashmatrix enables multiple data sets to be accessed in parallel and scaled linearly.

Using the matrix design, all of the NAND flash memory is shared by every CPU, allowing for flexibility and high performance. The entire platform is in a 2U enclosure and offers linear rack-scale scalability. Flashmatrix is optimally designed for low-power consumption.
