After suing Ericsson AB over mobile patents related to Long Term Evolution technologies, Apple has been hit by a countersuit from Ericsson, sending the two rivals into a new patent war.

The dispute involves a disagreement over pricing for patent licensing for the LTE technology, according to a Jan. 14 report by Bloomberg. The two companies could not reach a financial deal for the patents used by Apple in its iPhone and iPad devices.

Microsoft is releasing a new offering that enables organizations to migrate their Linux servers and virtual machines to the company's massive Azure cloud computing service. According to a company blog post, the functionality will boost support for heterogeneity in Migration Accelerator.

Migration Accelerator, based on technology acquired from last summer's InMage buy, enables organizations to transfer physical and virtual server workloads to the cloud.

IBM recently announced the launch of the 13th generation of its mainframe, the z13. The company said the z13 has been developed for the mobile and cloud worlds and is able to process more than 2.8 billion transactions per day. The system delivers scale and economics together with real-time encryption and analytics to meet the expectations of consumers for speed and safety for trillions of transactions in the mobile economy.

Starting this week, all users of Google's Cloud Platform will finally have access to Stackdriver's cloud application monitoring functionality. On Jan. 13, Google announced beta availability of Google Cloud Monitoring for its cloud platform.

Enterprises running in Google's cloud environment can tap Cloud Monitoring to keep an eye on performance, capacity and uptime of Google Apps Engine, Compute Engine and Cloud SQL. At some point, yet unannounced, Google will make the service available to Amazon Web Services, as well.
