Return on the Green IT Investment
The power needed to run data centers presents a double-whammy: the demand for more power raises costs for the energy, and all of that energy creates heat, which has to be cooled by air conditioning systems, which consume yet more electrical power. Senior executives are noticing, but new research shows that not everyone is practicing Green IT, as only 34 percent of CIOs surveyed by eWeek research report they are working on environmentally friendly IT initiatives. But some companies may be turning green without even knowing it. The survey also found that companies without a green initiative often wind up employing the same energy-saving procedures as those that do have such a formal initiative. Among the most prevalent technologies are server consolidation and server virtualization, as Stan Gibson reports in this eWeek Video.
