      ‘Trends in New-Gen Mobility, Apps, Devices’

      How do we connect new mobile platforms and handheld devices with the internet of things (IoT) to help us do new and routine functions faster and more accurately? This is all happening as we speak, and the COVID-19 pandemic crisis here in the first half of 2020 is moving this all along at warp speed.

      Look at the increased new usage of remote video apps by consumers. Zoom (up some 300% in usage), Cisco Webex, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Adobe Connect, Skype, GoToMeeting and others have never seen so much action. Cloud providers such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud and Google Cloud have had to add a great deal of capacity to satisfy the high demand for bandwidth. As the pandemic continues to disrupt our normal business lives, we are using this type of technology more and more to get our jobs done, meetings held and decisions made.

      For another mobility example, in the not-too-distant future we’ll be wearing augmented-reality or virtual-reality glasses that will use facial recognition software connected to the cloud to identify a person walking toward you—should you decide to utilize that function. You’ll even be able to assess whether a person is afflicted with a high temperature, so you’ll be able to avoid him or her as needed.

      New phones and laptops are getting better cameras, increased functionality and storage, and more applications than ever. New devices from Samsung (in particular, the Galaxy 20 5G smartphone), Apple, ASUS, HP, Lenovo, Dell and Toshiba are very impressive indeed.

      These are just a few use cases combining new mobile app platforms with networks. What else will we be seeing in the markets this year and next?

      These are only a few of the trends and issues we will chat about on Tuesday, May 12, on #eWEEKchat. Others:

      • The increasing use of machine learning and business analytics natively and through the cloud in our smartphones and other devices;
      • What new mobile devices might we be buying/using in the next 12 to 24 months?
      • What is working well, or not so well, for you?
      • What new mobility functions and products would you like to see become available?
      • What issues are you seeing—and solving—in mobile app development?

      Has Apple stopped innovating and is in a mere “refreshment” mode with all its devices? Probably not, but that’s another topic on people’s minds right about now.

      The connected mobility trends thread into almost every corner of our lives, and this intervention is only going to increase over time.

      Remember, the date has changed from past #eWEEKchats! Join us Tuesday, May 12, at 11 a.m. Pacific/2 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. GMT for an hour. Expect to learn something valuable.
