In a move to expand its offering for professional photographers and filmmakers, Apple Computer has purchased a San Diego-based company that makes color correction software and other applications.

Silicon Color is known for its professional-grade software, especially its FinalTouch 2K software, which is used by film colorists for both television and movies. The company also makes less expensive products for amateur filmmakers and photographers.

In a statement on its Web site, Silicon Color announced that it has been purchased by the Cupertino, Calif., computer maker for an undisclosed sum. Apple will acquire all of the companys intellectual property and honor any maintenance contracts.

The message on the site read: “We are pleased to announce that all Silicon Color technology and intellectual property, including FinalTouch color correction software, was recently sold to Apple. Maintenance agreements held by current Silicon Color customers will be honored by Apple until they expire.”

A Silicon Color spokesperson could not be immediately reached for comment.

Apple did not post an announcement about the purchase on its own Web site, although several sites dedicated to Apple did start circulating news of the purchase as of Oct. 16.

An Apple spokesman later confirmed the acquisition to eWEEK, but said the company would have no additional comment at this time.

Apple already offers a full editing suite, Final Cut Studio, as well as editing and creation software called iLife.

Apple is expected to announce its fourth-quarter earnings on Oct. 18.
