eBay is advising members of its Developers Program to change their passwords due to an unspecified threat to their accounts.

According to the company, eBay has discovered a way for someone to gain unauthorized access to account information on the Developers Program site.

In a blog post, Kumar Kandaswamy, head of the program, said exploiting the issue would not allow an attacker to steal Social Security numbers or banking or credit card information.

“Occasionally, fraudsters attempt to gain unauthorized access to the eBay Developers Program,” Kandaswamy wrote. “Fortunately, we have not detected any unusual activity with any Developer account.”

The Developers Program is meant to allow application developers to leverage eBay’s API to create tools for the site. eBay is now requiring all developers to follow stricter standards when creating passwords on the developer site. Developers do not need to change their passwords on the online auction site itself, however, according to the blog.

“If you believe you or your customers have been the victim of fraudulent activity, contact us immediately at developer-relations@ebay.com,” Kandaswamy wrote.
